Just before the outbreak of the Federation/Dominion conflict became full fledged, it became apparent that many of the older vessels in the Federation's fleet would not be able to stand up to the onslaught. Thus several classes were targeted for upgrades and refits, among them the Galaxy class. Their hull designs were altered to give added strength, new shielding modifications and more decks added. There were also upgrades to the medical facilities, making the Galaxy class refit a large capital ship capable of self-sustained exploration far beyond Federation space. Computerized Crew? The Emergency Medical Hologram that was once early fielded on Intrepid class has been further developed, and Long-term Holographic Personnel are available also for Engineering and Security in addition to Medical. Security Holograms can be duplicated several times over to guard specific areas through holo-emitters dispersed throughout the ship. Some of the newer programming associated with the Security Hologram is under development, but Starfleet technicians ensure that the "safest, most reliable programming" was used. For the most part these supplemental crew are restricted to particular areas of the ship with only a few having access to mobile holographic emitters which allow them access to all parts of the ship. Enhanced Living Areas Due to the nature of the crew already aboard the original Dauntless at the time of the refit's assignment, there have been major modifications in the crew quarters to accomodate staff with families. In addition to it's own daycare facilities, the Dauntless A features a school designed to teach all levels of school from pre-school to high school and offering remote collegiate level courses as well. Crew quarters have also been arranged to allow for quick adjustments which might be needed as families onboard expand. To accomodate the large population of the ship, there are eight holodecks aboard, several mess and recreation areas scattered throughout the ship, an arboretum and two full sized gymnasiums (one in the Marie decks reserved for their use only except by permission). There were also modifications in other areas of the ship to meet the specifications of the CO, COS, CMO and CEO. Marine Decks The larger size of the refit allows for the inclusion of Federation Marines for the purposes of added protection when on dangerous planetside missions and extra hands to defend the ship. Also new to the Dauntless are Marine Pilots who are trained for heavier combat than are most Fleet pilots. They are trained in both space and atmospheric air to ground combat. Sections of decks reserved for Marine housing and facilities are not openly accessible to civilians or general Fleet crew. Access is for authorized personnel or invited guests only as the Marines have far stricter rules of conduct and much more stringent schedules. This hard structure is what makes them the uniquely versatile and effective fighting force they are. It is often difficult for Fleet officers to understand the strange brotherhood of Marines. While a Fleet officer may come and go from a ship with hardly anyone really getting to know them, this is not true of Marines. They live and die hard and always guard each other's backs.
